The 2 main reasons you need a boiler service.

  • You value your life and the lives of those around you.
  • You want to get the most for what you paid for.

Boiler servicing is essential to keep your boiler in a safe working order for longer. Unfortunately it is a fact of life that a boiler’s components wear out, block up, get dirty or just break.

When components start to wear or get dirty or blocked up, your boiler starts running poorly and is not as efficient as it was designed to be. When this occurs, the finely tuned state that your installer or service engineer left your boiler in during installation or at the last service, gets disrupted and this starts a cycle of events within your boiler.

As your boiler starts running poorly, you may start getting sooty deposits inside your combustion chamber. This leads to a buildup over time that causes your boiler to work harder to achieve the output that you ask from it. The harder it works, the more build-up occurs over time and the worse it gets. This will also, as you can see, increase the running cost of your boiler due to burning more fuel to achieve the required output.

Eventually, if an out of tune or failing boiler does not get serviced, it may become a danger to life by starting to produce deadly and odourless Carbon Monoxide gas.

Flexible Oil Hoses - Lifespan of 12 months.

Your oil boiler also has flexible hoses inside which degrades over time. This unfortunately is not a matter of if, but when. At some stage that flexible hose will crack and cause an oil spillage. Forgive me for stating the obvious, but your heating oil is flammable and can start a fire that can destroy your house. The steel braided hoses need to be replaced every 12 months and the green long life hoses have a lifespan of about 3 years.

Oil Nozzle - Lifespan of 12 months.

The oil entering your boiler gets pumped through a nozzle between 8 and 10 bar which vaporises the heating oil in the combustion chamber and burns to create the heat which in turn heats your radiators and water. Over time, nozzles will become blocked and cause incomplete combustion which in turn will give you your sooty deposits as described earlier or your boiler may stop firing completely, requiring you to call your engineer.

Filters - Lifespan depending on wear.

You may have more than one filter on your oil supply between your oil tank and your boiler. These filters will often just need a quick visual inspection and a clean if necessary.

If you have a brand spanking new Oil Boiler installed, you will want to keep up with the manufacturer’s warranty, won’t you? Of course you do. So don’t risk voiding a 2 to 7 or more year warranty and get that date in your diary, pronto. We recommend starting to book your service in around month 10 to avoid paying higher prices for short notice work.
